Why I garden: Dirt therapy

Mom's Garden

Why do I garden? I can sum it up in two words – dirt therapy. It takes me away from everything else – both physically and mentally. When I’m in my garden, everything else takes a back seat – whether my feet and fingers are in the dirt all day long or just for a half-hour. While there’s nothing like the taste of the summer’s first tomato, equally satisfying is the road the plants and I take to get there. And the smell of those soft, fuzzy tomato leaves – it has to be one of my favorite all-time smells! JulieRiebemug2

I started Garden Booyah back in 2012; its name is a tip of the hat to the Northeastern Wisconsin tradition of a soup/stew that seems to call for just about everything but the kitchen sink. My gardens have always been a little like booyah – I throw in a mix of different fruit and veggies and let it stew – taking care to stir it now and then – with the hopes that it produces a delectable smorgasbord.

My goal is to share my gardening experiences good or bad. I don’t claim to have any answers about gardening and this isn’t a blog to give “official” gardening advice. It’s simply a way to share the enjoyment I get from digging in the dirt. Along the way, I hope other gardeners share their own experiences, too. I’d like to hear your gardening stories and what you think of mine. Email me at julieriebe@yahoo.com or just comment on my posts. Maybe we can create some “garden booyah” together!

  2. Why did I not see this before? Love dirt therapy! I still get a bit perturbed when I go to the WordPress category list and don’t find the word Garden or Vegetables. It’s hard to think that there aren’t more out there like us dirt-y types. Boo yah!
