A garden romance in the making

I’m not ashamed to admit it. I’m in love — with a hosta.

It’s hard for me to believe because I’ve been boycotting hostas ever since a bad experience with an unruly, bug-bitten, shabby-looking gang of the shade-loving plant. Seriously, I swore I would never, ever plant a hosta at our

20120602-210458.jpgSand Acres house. It just wasn’t worth it to put so much effort into a plant, only to end up being frustrated when it didn’t do what I wanted it to. That’s my teen-age daughter’s job. And she’s really good at it.

But I took one look at the Whirlwind hosta and it took my breath away. Its dark-green streaked margins have a creamy white center — each wavy leaf looks like a little flame. When you look at the Whirlwind from above, you can almost see the flames lapping up the fire. I’m having heart palpitations just writing about it.
